Hong Kong's History Hong Kong's history dates back to prehistoric times when it was inhabited by various groups of people, including the Punti and Hakka communities. In the early 19th century, Hong Kong was a small fishing village and a haven for pirates. In 1842, Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain as part of the Treaty of Nanking, which ended the First Opium War between China and Britain. In the years that followed, Hong Kong developed into a major port and trading center, serving as a gateway to China and the rest of Asia. In 1898, Britain leased the New Territories, a large area of land adjacent to Hong Kong Island, from China for a period of 99 years. This effectively expanded Hong Kong's territory and provided more land for development. During World War II, Hong Kong was occupied by Japan from 1941 to 1945.
